With construction on Laguna Niguel real estate beginning in 1960, it is one of the oldest master-planned communities in the state. Its name is derived from the Spanish word for lagoon and the Juaneno Indian word “Nigueli,” which was the name of a nearby village in the area. On November 7, 1989, Laguna Niguel residents voted by an overwhelming majority to incorporate as a city. By doing so, Laguna Niguel became the 29th city in Orange County, California.
