Founded in 1857, Anaheim has a rich cultural history. The German grape farmers and wine makers that first settled the land named the city Annaheim, which in German is translated “Home by the Santa Anna River.” Even though the grape industry was destroyed by insects in the 1880s, the farmers of the region were not disheartened. Taking advantage of the coastal climate, new crops were planted and harvested including lemons and oranges.
